The World of E.J.A. - Life and Letters of
Elizabeth Jane Austin 1827-1905 is about the oldest sister of the author's
grandfather. Elizabeth was born in Mexico, New York, the first
child of Henry and Maria Austin. The author had many questions about
Elizabeth: Who was she? What did she look like? What were her interests and
accomplishments? How did she fit into the family and into the community? What
were her aspirations in life? The author needed answers.
In 2001 the author became intrigued with a packet of 32 letters, most
written by Elizabeth Jane's own hand, found in materials inherited from
her father Henry Warner Austin and her aunt Edith Austin Moore. The
letters provided an opportunity for meeting this little-known aunt. Also
available were two Civil War diaries written in 1864-65 by Elizabeth's brother
Daniel Henry Austin, which had many references to his
sister "Liz." Putting these sources together resulted in this book.
Elizabeth was an "ordinary" person, but it was with real excitement that
the author wrote this fascinating account of her life. The book also
includes seven beautiful photographs of Elizabeth and members of her Austin family.
